Recruiting

The Regiment today continues to recruit its soldiers from the traditional recruiting areas of Glasgow and Ayrshire. The Battalion is presently based in Glencorse Barracks near Penicuik in Edinburgh. The Battalion is currently preparing for operations in Afghanistan.  In recent years the Battalion has been on operations in Bosnia, Northern Ireland and Kosovo and has exercised in: Canada, Poland,  Belize, The Falklands and Jordan.

Fusiliers are infantry soldiers, and are using the expertise gained from many years of involvement in Northern Ireland to good effect in Baghdad, Basra, Cyprus and Port Stanley, they returned from Cyprus in March 2007 and are now permanently based at Glencorse Barracks, Penicuik nr Edinburgh.

You will be given 24 weeks training at Catterick (near Darlington) with 2 weeks leave in between.  Before you join the Battalion - Your further training in the Battalion will be challenging and will form the basis of your future Army Life. As well as maintaining your basic skills, you will have the opportunity of specialised training in a wide variety of employment. In addition there are prospects for promotion for those who demonstrate aptitude and commitment.  

After a period as a soldier in a Rifle Platoon, various specialist jobs are available which, naturally, require extra training. Specialisations include:

Sniper - Signaller - Medic - Stores Accountant - 81mm Mortar / Anti Tank Missile Operator - Assault Pioneer - Regimental Policeman - Drummer - Piper - Bugler - Physical Training Instructor - Gunner - Mess Steward - Intelligence Clerk - Machine Gunner - Fleet Manager - Driver (most vehicles up to LGV 1) - Driving Instructor.

Whatever you choose you will become part of a close knit combat team, this training and experience will set you up for the future with civilian qualifications which are also available under Scotvec and NVQ Schemes.
