The Great War 1914-18
2/Lieutenant J.M. Craig 4th RSF
For most conspicuous bravery at Gaza 1917
2/Lt. Craig organised the relief of an advance post attacked by a large enemy force which was then driven back to its lines. While his men were removing the casualties they came under very heavy fire. He then personally rescued two wounded men, an NCO and a Medical Officer. Whilst taking the latter to cover 2/Lt. Craig was himself wounded. Nevertheless, he persisted in a successful rescue. As the enemy continued a heavy fire with the addition of shrapnel and high explosive, 2/Lt. Craig scooped cover for the wounded and thus was the means of saving their lives. These latter acts of bravery occurred in broad daylight, under full observation of the enemy and within close range.
