West of Scotland & Glasgow Branch of the Parachute Regimental Association Appeal collection

Our friends, veterans of the West of Scotland & Glasgow Branch of the Parachute Regimental Association, will be rattling their collecting tins for the RHF Museum Heritage Appeal at Glasgow’s Central Station on Friday 25 May 2018 between the hours of 0800 and 1500.

Central Station is the larger of the two present main-line railway terminals in Scotland’s largest city. Opened by the Caledonian Railway in 1879 on the north bank of the River Clyde and was congested from its inception, it was necessary to expand the bridge over Argyll Street and construct an additional platform.

Surprisingly, the original Victorian platform survives below the station, from which troops left for the front and, sadly, some bodies appear to have been returned to the morque to be collected by their families for burial. Central Station runs tours to explore the depths of Central Station and the Museum is working with Central Station to investigate possible connections with our antecedent regiments.
