Message Board: The Royal Highland Fusiliers : John Mallon - Ex Sgt 1 RHF 1966 - 1975

By John Mallon (Johnmallon) on Tuesday, August 22, 2006 - 12:29 pm:

Is there anybody out there who remembers me? I served in the Regiment from January 1967 until April 1975, when I transferred to the RAOC as was. I served initially with the Signal Platoon from 1967 until January 1969, when I transferred to the Bn Orderly Room as a Clerk, where I served until being posted to A Coy as Coy Clerk in June 1970. I served in A Coy, with Baldy Anderson as the CSM, Charlie Was in B Coy, and Buff Jaws was in C Coy. Woofy Welsh I think was in Sp Coy. I was posted to the Depot in Glencorse in July 1971 where I served until being posted back to the Regiment in Feb/Mar 1974 to the Ord Rm, I thought, but this did not happen. I was posted to B Coy, and then the PRI, awaiting trasfer to the RAOC. So, if your memory can go back that far, I can be contacted on either the Forum or at my work e-mail address. Was a great friend of Davie Howe, and still am, new "Big Wullie when he was a "CSgt" and "Instant Anger when he was a "CSgt". Sadly left the Regiment in April of 1975 on transfer to the RAOC.

By John Mallon (Johnmallon) on Wednesday, August 23, 2006 - 02:59 pm:

John,

At that time I was in the Orderly Room with Davie Howe and George Gray. Jimmy Stewart (RS) was Chiefy. I had just moved from the Signals Platoon. People like Tam Hosie, Wally Wallace and Eric Farrell were in the Recce Platoon at that time as well. The last time I saw you was in "The Barras" when I asked you why you were selling "A*****" items on your stall, remember?

Cheers, John

Hi John

I still remember you as clear as day. It's nice to hear that you're still aroundI was begining to think that most of the people I served with during the early part of my service had died because thats about the only type of news you get in Inverness. My dad Silvestro (Hammy the barber) did die in August 2000 but we all have fond memories of him. My mother Mary still lives here in Inverness and is well. I also am in good health and still in Inverness. Hope to hear more from you soon.

Hi Davie

Nice to be in touch with you again. I've been reading lots of your messages and nice to see lots of old faces and names I have'nt heard or seen in a long time. I think the last time we met was on the Office Managers course you were running at Worthy Down in 1990. There is plenty of Fusiliers in Inverness and I'll post a list in the near future, also a few HLI and attached personel whom quite a few will rember. I also noticed John McCrimmon thinks Harry Adams is dead, HE IS ALIVE AND WELL. I'll also search out a few old photos and a few of Hammy's which might be of interest. Take care and give my regards to your family.

Hi there John

Nice to hear from you again after all these years. We certainly go back a very long time. As you said, to Luneburg with the HLI, Remember the school there? I don't know if I should thank you or not for letting me go to Brecon in your place when in Redford, I ended up back in the place as an instructor. Still don't know which was better Instructor or pupil. Might have something to do with CAF Mac, does this name bring back any memories. Best OC I ever had. I'll pass on regards to Mary and I'm sure she has many fond memories of your mam & dad.

Hi Rab

Nice to hear from yourself and to be held in such high esteem. I just believe that everyone in the army should be treated the same regardless of his rank and the RSM should set the best example. I enjoyed my time in Cambridge and was was shattered when I had to leave because i needed a triple heart byepass. My health at this time is very good and I've had no real problems since leaving the Army. Many thanks for taking the time to post a note.

I've started putting together a list of as many ex Bn as I can find in Inverness. Big Harry Adams and Nicky Fitzpatrick will give me a hand. Once I've got it together I'll post it on the forum. Later I'm going to try and start up some sort of club. This needs to be done up here in Inverness, we've gone to long without and need to look out for each other a little bit more. Today I found Fergie the piper in a bad way. Harry Adams had to get him some assistance. I think much of his problem is due to loneliness and this is where we can help. I'll keep in touch. If anyone reading this wants to get in touch with more privacy please contact me at;

Hello John Hamilton. You mentioned Caf Mac or Big Loup as we called him in B Coy in the '60s. He was absolutely great, what a soldier. He came to see me at Worthy Down 2 or 3 times when he was working for the ASVU. He lives down in Devon somewhere, now well retired.

Hellorerr John,

Aye I caught TB a few years back which has ruled me out of the London Olympics!!!!

I was "cured" after 6 months chemo but as for being totally cured I don't know.(I prefer to think of it as contained).

John, am I right in thinking your boy went to Q.V.S? I seem to remember the two of us talking about it in a command post during the Rowallan Targe.

By John Hamilton (Rsmjth) on Thursday, August 24, 2006 - 07:50 pm:

Hi again Davie

Under CAF Mac I went from Fusilier to Cpl and along with Jim Mac Taggart who also lives up here were the only two JNCO's promoted to Cpl in about 18 mths in A Coy, he did however bust plenty. Jim's father Jimmy served both in the HLI and RHF and Billy his brother served in the Bn, sadly he died a very lonely death a few years ago. CAF Mac was also OC SNCO Div at NCO Tac Wng Brecon. My father Silv also served wth him in the HLI in Cyprus and had great memories of him. He was a great soldier who always led from the front and by example. Wullie Shaw was privelaged to be his CSM an appointment I could only dream of. One of the funny memories I have of him was Nicky Fitzpatrick as his signaller with an A41 on his back. Nicky trying to keep up was comical. CAF Mac About 6' 3" and Wee Nicky taking 2 steps to CAF's 1 . I could go on for a long time , the memories funny now, horrendous at the time but if they were bad we would'nt remember we only think of the good times. They were plentyfull.

PS Anyone else serve with CAF Mac (The Loup)

By John Hamilton (Rsmjth) on Thursday, August 24, 2006 - 08:02 pm:

Hi Dick

Your almost spot on, both my sons John & Lee went to QVS. In actual fact the Bn had an enormous amount of sons who atteded the school. At that time I think it all started with Martin Shaw followed by mine, Scrubber Mac Allisters, Nicky Fitzpatricks 3 sons, Tam Mac Allisters And the motion contiued. You must have a great memory to remember it as you did. Take care

Hi All

John Hamilton

I remember me and a few others, Gary Graham, Jason Avdic, Billy Ayre, all heading up the road from Cambridge by train, we sitting in the pub in the train station having a quick drink before the train arrived, this Scottish guy was sitting at the next table and joined our conversation, we all sat talking to this stranger until our train arrived, a few laughs then we parted ways, little did we know that this stranger was Your good self and would be the next RSM, i think the following week you became RSM, you can only imagine our suprise when we found out who you where.

Good Morning All. John I think that's a good thing that you are doing in Inverness, helping each other. That's the way it should be. There's too many people forget we are all part of the big family. In my area the guys you know are Old Topper Brown (Mil Band) Conky Benson, Stevie Keane and Sammy Hush (ex ACC) who was Sgts mess cook in Nee Soon. There's one of that lot who is always on about "the Regt done him wrong". No prizes for guessing who that might be and it's not Sammy Hush. Dick was mentioning HLI sons, another one I remember is Jimmy Hickson's boy. I think when I left he was a sgt?

I'm sure it was your good self who gave me an almighty rollocking when my son inadvertantly "borrowed" the CO's bird house from his back garden in Cambridge.

The funny thing was, the day before, his teacher had told the class to bring in something to do with wild life.

I reckon he deserved a pat on the back for ingenuity.

Many thanks for that. Annie and I go all the way back to Fort George 1968 when we where in the same section 2 Pl A/Coy.

Others in the sec where, Norrie Lithgow, Geordie Brannan, John Norman, Wullie Duthie. I'm delighted however that Annie found his family. When I was RSM Annie came into my office to ask for advice on buying a house. After rambling on for about 15 mins about Building Societies, Insurrance Companies and the like he told me he did'nt want a mortgage he would buy it cash. I thought for a few minutes and asked," Annie could you give me some advice about how to buy a house". Over the moon he did it. I'm only to glad the CO was the one who organised his driving instruction, Knowing my luck he would have produced a HGV1 just before the test.

Davie Young here. Good to hear from you. I remember our time at Glencorse when I was an instructor and you were my Plt Sgt. Remember what happened when a few 3 day old recruits went a bit wild. I remember the powers to be tried to use you as a scapegoat I am glad you stuck to your guns we were all behind you. What do you do up there in Culloden? How is Ann?

John Hamilton glad to see you are doing alright. Spoke to you a few years ago when I was up on Business in Inverness.

I will treat big Rab the guvnor's comments regarding the RSMs after you were useless with the contempt it deserves. AS you say getting to RSM of the 1st bn is the greatest honour for a soldier to achieve in his career, and lets face it you do not get there by accident. Forget what rank you achieved Rab. I certainly enjoyed my time as the TARA.

Going back to Hope- Thompson I was referring to his Father.

I just foung this quote on the web about him.

"Brigadier Hope-Thompson R.S.F. was one of the most exceptional men of his generation. I understand that at 29 he was the youngest brigadier in the army when he became the CO of the 50th Indian Parachute Brigade. Hope-Thompson is now credited at the Battle of Sanshak, with playing a crucial role in blunting and irreparably delaying, the advance of the Japanese Imperial Army's invasion of India during the Imphal Kohima campaign. For those who are interested in and admired H-T, I recommend that they read 'The Battle at Sanshak' by Harry Seaman (Leo Cooper 1989 ISBN:0-85052-720-1)".

you did not hit a nerve as you put it. I thought this forum was for finding old muckers and for having a chinwag not for throwing insults. You stated that after Hammy up till 1995 the RSMs were useless. not only was that an insult to me its also one to Robbie who took over from John and Jocky Frew who took over from me. I bet you our paths did not even cross!! Thats hard to work out as I do not know your surname or the years you served.

Lets keep this site for what it is meant for, we all had our jobs to do when we served, now we have all got very different lifes.

What did you think of the Tattoo. The playing and the arrangement of Highland Cathederal did'nt come close to the original played in Berlin live by Tyrer and Stoddart, in my oppinion. The original recording on the Proud Heritage LP/CD is also the best I've heard.

Comments/memories. I thought the live display in Berlin was the most moving musical performance I ever experienced.

Can anyone tell me why the RSM is known as the TARA?

In my relatively short time on this planet (i'll not be able to use that sentence for much longer)I've only ever been given 2 explainations.

1. TARA is Irish for chieftain

2. It was derived from yorkshire Battalions who called the RSM, t'RSM (if you imagine a yorkshire accent you'll get my drift)

Any help or far fetched stories will be appreciated.

John Mc Crimmon, Good Morning

Talking of the Twist, Malta is where I learned it to. Mostly down in Spinola at the roller skating ring as I was a little to young to go in pubs. When I went to Cornwall School in Dortmund a short time later, I won the Twisting Competition with a girl called Sandra Wrightman. Do you remember the Bn Group at the time in Iserlohn, was it Gerry & the Noisey Bast****. I remember it was Gerry McBride, Big Min Bryson, Wee Smudge Smith was the drummer I think, who were the others. Actually they were quite good.

Hello All

TARA. Tara was/is a village in Ireland and was once the seat of the Irish kings. My own theory is that TARA for the RSM was something to do with the days when the army served in India. A lot of sayings and words that are now common to the army evolved from that era. RASMAN was a product of the 20th century and basically is a bastardisation of the letters RSM. The man for this is Donald Mack, a pure genius at mil history.

John H and Davy Y. I had an incursion into Blackhill in the '50s to visit my Mother's cousin in Hogganfied St. Her claim to fame or notoriety was she was Arthur Thompson's mother in law. She was blown up in his car in the '60s. I'm sure I told Mary and Silv about it.

Hello Billy Lamb. I did meet up with Helmut for a bevvy.

My wife Helen just happened to have been looking up the word TARA because I had a boat a few years back and Nicky Fitzpatrick suggested RATARA for a name. The definition she came up with was the Gaellic for "The pinnacle of the rock". There is also a lot of reference in Hindu to Tara who was a Godess. Maybe D Mac would have something to say about this.

I know he's retired and his young lad lives with him, as I said the last time I saw him he was looking well, I'm up in Aberdeen, don't know of many old and bold here but I did hear the original Soup Campbell was up this way. Thats the Soup who was in the M.I. room at Redford in the 70s.Jonh,H weren't you my Plt Sgt just after Highfield 75. Saying all this I might be completely wrong as time has addled my brain.I flit between here and Dundee and see Andy Barry, ex A Coy and Stevie Langdale was good enough to give me a lift to Wullie Shaws' do. If I do see Tam I'll pass on your regards and tell him he's remembered. Dek Nesbitt, (Para)

Hi Dek

I think you've got me or the place mixed up slightly in your posting. At the time I was in MacRory Park, I think, ( gray matter also going), but I did have a Nesbitt in my Pl, or are you thinking of Wee Hammy.

On Aberdeen is'nt Malky Campbell Ex WO1 not staying over in your direction.

Harry Morrow, good to see you back on the site. Remembered you were moving but did not know the details. When you go to Egypt watch out for the klefty wallahs and the shufti wallahs, bad people these rag heads. Anyway have a good holiday and don't drink any sea water.

Davie,

Nice to hear from you once again, hope you are keeping well. This is only temporary, until BT can supply a new line & number. At least this lets me read & keep in touch with the forum. Fly out on Friday morning from Glasgow airport, looking forward to the holiday, as moving house was really stressful (never again) next move will be the crematorium. Davie, wasnt being cheeky when I said you should be Mr RHF. It was in fact a compliment, if anyone is looking for any information on ex 1 RHF they all know who they can turn to for the information. I'll heed your info on the klefty wallahs & the shuftti wallahs. Reminds me of a lot of ex RHF. Finish up today & wont be back to work until 18th Sept. Take care, speak to you soon.

John Hamilton,

Nice to hear from you, yes we were neighbours in Singers. Family all doing well, got a wee grandson 2 year old, keeps me active & busy. We go back a long way, from being on the same nco's cadre at Fort George. Loup McKenzie, Coy OC, Wullie Shaw Wo11 A Coy, these were the days. Would do it all over again if I had the chance. If you are in touch with Stevie McAuley (Popeye) ask him how is wee Tam Woods is doing. Wee Tam took a type of stroke not so long ago. How are you doing after your tripple transplant, fine I hope. Take care looking forward to your comments in the forum. Regards to all up in Snakie.

Catch up with you when I return fron Holidays.

Hi Lenny, sorry about that date, I remember standing at the Coy Office at Redford and you were in civvies. I asked what you were up to and I'm sure you said demob. Then again you were a Sgt and I was a Jock so why should you tell me anything but even in those days you were a nice guy I didn't have reason to disbelieve you. Do you remember that contact in the Ballygomartin Road?We were on multiples, a section on foot and a section in a Land rover but the area was so big we had to give the foot patrol a lift up.There were 8 bodies in a swb Land rover it was a bit like an Indian train, bodies hanging everywhere.Driving up to Glencairn and had just turned off into the Glencairn, you'd just turned round to say something when we both saw the round or whatever it was hit the side of the Land Rovers metal trim. It pinged of that passed Daz Hinds a**e and off into the distance. You asked what was that and I think we both realised at the same time what it was.You shouted contact and Murdoch the driver stood on the brakes, dont know about the rest of you's but I did a back flip from a sitting position. Anyway we took cover, you asked if anyone could see anything and someone pointed to the only open window. You sent Daz and I round to the front of the house which faced onto Ballygomartin Rd.We counted the doors til we got to the one we thought the shot had come from.It was a big ornate thing painted white. Being a fan of John Wayne I rushed up and with my size 7 D.M.S. kicked the door, nothing happened, it didnt even rattle. I kicked it again, still nothing. One more time, same result. Daz had this idea, stick your rifle thro' the letter box. This was promptly done and on my own initiative I called to the occupants to open up.The silence was deafening, I must have been there 10 minutes shouting, banging, kicking, swearing. Eventually I turned to Daz and leaning on the door said I couldn't get in. I must have lent on the handle because just then I fell in the door. Anyway we made our way back to the rest of the section and were asked if we'd found anything, I mumbled a reply about locked doors and looked to Daz for confirmation only to see his shoulders shaking trying not to pish himself laughing.Something did strike me as funny though, not quite right. I counted the windows and counted the doors, they didn't match up and we'd gone to the wrong house.I managed to buy Daz's silence by promising him a bevvy in the Festival Tav when we got back to Redford. Some other names who were there that day, Davy Allerdyce,Rab Laird, Mingy,Jim Mehaw. Jim Henderson. I think you had just joined the Coy Shug. AH professional soldiers

Hi Lenny, It's Dek Nesbitt, sorry I didn't sign off with my own name just my nickname from those days. I got out in April 78, I now work at Aberdeen University lecturing in Quantum Physics. When did you re-enlist and when did you finally finish and what do you do now.By the way where are you now Shuggie Gracy, I've good memories of my time with you and 6plt. Lenny,

Don't know if you remember me.

John Mallon, last time I saw you, I think you were in Charlie Company/Provo Staff. How is life in "Sneckie", still as good. Was up in Inverness a couple of years ago on holiday, visited the Fort, brought back some memories, even had a pint in the NAAFI. Met Davie Orr in Inverness. As Davie Howe said, could do with you down here south of Hadrians Wall, cost me a bloody fortune as well to have my decking laid.

Hope everything is going well for you Lenny, speak to you soon.
