RHF Cap Badge

.

The instructions for uploading pictures are contained within the "Documentation (Formatting)" area to the left of you screen.

But honest guys its dead bloody easy.

start by placing the picture you want to share somewhere on your computer thats easy to locate i.e. desktop/my documents/briefcase

then you open the conversation/reply/topic you want to post your message to

in the add a message box type in a quick description of what your picture is about THEN...

(I'll describe the functions cause when you use the actuall signs the programm thinks your posting a picture!)

use a BACK slash.....\ .....not a /!!!! followed immediately by the words image followed immediately by

the fancy open brackets sign { ... not [ or ( the the words ....my picture.... and the fancy close brackets...} then click the preview/post message button

once you have posted your message and picture it will show you a preview but the image will appear as a small box with "your image here" this is normal and you should simply post the message where the box will "as if by magic!" appear... give it a go

Ronnie

Loved your photo of four Cpls does Jimmy still

sing Santa Lucia, spent my honeymoon in Watties

family accomodation.Duece was my neighbour and

friend from 61-76,and after I came out.If Ghengis

is out there does he remember the parade in Benghazi when Scanni the bugler was that drunk

Greg McArthur hid behind a gravestone and played

the bugle. On that same parade Maj Halsted hit

five fusiliers with his sword and we found it

funny, and didnt report him or go to the RMP.

By Ronnie Wilkie on Tuesday, June 28, 2005 - 07:56 pm:

I met Jimmy McGahan a few months ago after last having seen him 33years ago and he was telling me he has a whole host of illnesses and by his own admission "couldnae blaw up a paper bag". I thought he looked great and if I get the chance I will post some photos of him and I, the before and after if you like!

Wattie I last seen about 10 years ago when I was up in Inverness. Deuce, well he was never out of my house in Singapore and we both drank together in the Beehive and other less salubrious hostelries usually with Sil Hamilton in tow. The story about Scanny I can't comment on, it was before my time, but I can't recollect ever hearing of anything like that and, if true, I am sure a story like that would have passed into regimental folklore.

Once I get the hang of this photo posting thing I'll stick some on.

Two Pipe Majors on parade, Pipe Major D.W. Aitken BEM and Pipe Major D. Caird, sadly both deceased. Pipey Aitken was personal piper to HRH The Princess Margaret, Pipey Caird went on to become personal piper to HRH The Queen. Others in the front rank, myself next to P/M Caird, Sandy Govan, Jimmy McGahan and Fanny Forbes. Then its the german band as Pipey Aitken used to call them.

Edinburgh Castle 1969.

By Ronnie Wilkie on Friday, July 01, 2005 - 08:50 pm:

Inverness 1970. No Pipe Major on parade, can't remember why.

Front rank left to right, Fanny Forbes, Jimmy McGahan, Sandy Govan and Me. Drum Major R.D. McGeachan.

By Ronnie Wilkie on Friday, July 01, 2005 - 09:00 pm:

Probably the best Pipes & Drums 1RHF ever had. Cyprus UN tour.

Front rank left to right, Davey Caird, Wullie Cairney, Fanny Frame and P/M Davey Aitken.

Drum Major Jimmy Hopewell.

By John McCrimmon on Friday, July 01, 2005 - 10:14 pm:

Ronnie

Dont you think Sandy Govan could be the

father of the Proclaimers.

By Ronnie Wilkie on Saturday, July 02, 2005 - 08:39 pm:

John

Sandy was known as "Harada", after Fighting Harada. Sandy had a Far East look about him, a wee bit further East than Leith!!!!

I don't know who would be the most relieved about that Sandy or the Proclaimers.

Inverness 1970, is that not possibly, Walesy, Ronnie Maitland, with Kipper behind him on the snare drum ? in the second from left rank.

By Anonymous on Wednesday, July 06, 2005 - 01:24 pm:

Probably added ten years onto Walesy's age, cannie be him

By Anonymous on Wednesday, July 06, 2005 - 01:41 pm:

By Ronnie Wilkie on Thursday, July 07, 2005 - 08:58 pm:

It is Ronnie Maitland, but there is no one there by the name of Wales.

It is not the best photo in the world but I think I have a clearer copy when I come across it I'll post it.

Rab

By Ronnie Wilkie on Monday, July 25, 2005 - 07:35 pm:

Pipes & Drums Nee Soon Singapore 1972. How many can you recognise?

I'll acknowledge all attempts.

By Davie Howe on Tuesday, July 26, 2005 - 01:18 pm:

Ronnie, front rank, not too bad: From the right - Rab Quar, Yourself, Deuce, Jimmy Weir, Jimmy Baigrie (I think?), Col Anderson, Davie Caird, Capt Grant (Atholl Highlander), Fanny Forbes, One of the Watts?, Ronnie Maitland, Centre rank I recognise Wullie Cairnie and Scanny, Tam Ward, Rear Rank can recognise is it McLeish the big drummer and the wee slim swarthy guy whose name escapes me. Best I can do.

Davie

By John McCrimmon on Tuesday, July 26, 2005 - 01:41 pm:

Ronnie

Agree with most of Davies names

is the swarthy one in rear rank Boozy Hughes?.j

By Davie Howe on Tuesday, July 26, 2005 - 03:20 pm:

Ronnie,

The piper standing on the left, wi' those legs it must be Sandy Govan and also can see Boozy in the rear rank but the swarthy wee guy's name still evades me? Behind Fanny Forbes, McQuade?

Davie

By Davie Howe on Tuesday, July 26, 2005 - 03:22 pm:

Ronnie,

last time. Is that Ghengis behind Davie Caird and the CO?

By Davie Howe on Tuesday, July 26, 2005 - 04:20 pm:

Ronnie,

the swarthy wee guy his name is Kitson he was a sgt when I left the Bn.

Davie

By Ronnie Wilkie on Tuesday, July 26, 2005 - 04:20 pm:

Well done Davie and John, the front rank was spot on except for Jimmy Baigrie, thats R.D. MacGeachan.

Regarding the rest, second row 3rd left Tam Ward Scanny is 4th from the right.

Rear rank, the bass drummer (big drummer if you want to call it that) is Wattie Moore (wearing the leopard skin) However if you are talking big drummer as in terms of height in the rear rank, 2nd on the right of Wattie, thats Mick McLeish, leading drummer at the time, the wee swarthy guy next to him as you put it is John Kitson.

Also in the rear rank 4th from the left is Boozy Hughes.

The two pipers standing are the younger of the Watt brothers, Billy on the left and Alan on the right. Iain the oldest is in the front rank as was correctly identified.

Wullie Cairney was demobbed shortly after we returned to Germany after the UN tour of Cyprus. Sandy Govan I think left us in Bulford. Ghengis is not in the photograph, he was in hospital.

Anyway well done a good effort after all these years.

By Kung-Fu on Tuesday, July 26, 2005 - 06:16 pm:

Davie, did John Kitson go to the anti-tank ?

By RAB QUAR on Tuesday, July 26, 2005 - 07:08 pm:

HI DAVIE,

IAIN WATT IS IN THE FRONT RANK HIS BROTHER BILLY ONTHE RIGHT OF THE SECOND RANK. OTHER PIPERS I REMEMBER ARE,TAM GAULT,GLYNN REID,MAXIE,BILLY ANDERSON,RAB GILMOUR AND ON THE LEFT IT COULD BE SLIM MURRAY.THE OTHER TWO DRUMMERS I RECOGNISE ARE SID BROWN AND EDDIE FERROL,THE NEE SOON VIRGINS BEST CUSTOMER

By Davie Howe on Tuesday, July 26, 2005 - 07:34 pm:

Hi Kung-Fu and Rab Quar,

I think John Kitson did go to the anti-tank in Redford and Rab great to hear from you after all these years. When I was at work I tried to phone several times but you were always on day off. Some job mate, hope the family are OK and you are fit and healthy. Regards

Davie Sorry about no image it was a photo in Sgt

mess 30 years ago. Will try again.

By Ronnie Wilkie on Sunday, July 31, 2005 - 12:39 pm:

Sorry Rab, Rab Gilmour and Slim Murray are not in the photograph. Other pipers, in no particular order, are Spud Murphy, Ally Spence, Lonely McCall and Walsh, forget his first name and I don't think he was a playing member.

So that raises the question when did Rab Gilmour and Big Slim leave?

By Kung-Fu on Friday, August 05, 2005 - 05:14 pm:

@Ronnie Wilkie,

I have managed to find some band pics from Singapore, but not sure if I can unstick them from the album for scanning, but here is a couple I could....

By Ronnie Wilkie on Friday, August 05, 2005 - 07:18 pm:

Kung Fu

Thanks for that, I'm trying to remember the occasion the photograph was taken, is it the final parade of the ANZUK forces at Sembawang?

The other photo is of course "oor Fergie". I believe he is in Inverness now.

Thanks again for that

Ronnie

By Kung-Fu on Friday, August 05, 2005 - 11:05 pm:

Ronnie, your welcome !

Not sure myself as I can see Ally Spence in there (my copy is clearer) 5th rank from the front 2nd piper in, he was in the mortars when we left Singapore, so was he seconded back to the pipes for one last blaw?

Fergie is showing off the tattoos on his fingers (L)SCOT (R)LAND I think she found them interesting!

I have another couple of band pics taken on the square at Nee Soon but they are stuck in the album and not scanning very clear, I will try and tidy them up over the weekend.

By Kung-Fu on Sunday, August 07, 2005 - 10:37 pm:

@ Ronnie Wilkie

Here are the other two pictures, this is the best I can get them. It looks as though they were taken on the square (don't know what the event was, maybe a beating the retreat? the "German Band" are also in the first pic)...

By Kung-Fu on Sunday, August 07, 2005 - 10:55 pm:

@ Ronnie Wilkie

Here's a poser for you, end of NI tour 1974 we came back on the RFA Sir Lancelot, who was the lone piper seeing us in at the docks in Glasgow?

Other picture is the "German Band" playing on the quayside as ship moored (note the RRT top left)...

Davie Are you trying to insinuate that I like

a small refreshment.I remember the golden nugget

in Iserlohne, when our last orders were a pint

tumbler full of Captain Morgan two bottles of coke

all to be drank in 30mins.Then hold a drill parade

on the way back to the Coy lines. Then have Jimmy

McKelvie pay you a visit with the dreaded towel.

By the way I still like a good bevy,I dont think

there are anyone on the forum who drank with us

in those days ,we were the frowned upon for

partaking in light refreshments.

Kung Fu

Only just getting round to seeing your pics, but to answer your questions in no particular order, I would have known the lone piper was Rab Quar ( was speaking to him today funnily enough) Ally Spence never really made the grade as a piper, he was part of my section in NI and Singapore and was the only guy I know who kept remarking on the "wee lobsters" (scorpions) in Malaya, nice guy for all that. Any idea where he is now? He was an Edinburgh man as I recall.

Its a pity some of your photographs have been contaminated by the "German" or "sitting doon" band.

Thanks again

Sorry for the case of mistaken identity. I did not have the old binns on when I first looked at the photo.

I thought Boozy was dead, although I don't remember where that information came from. Tam Hughes I ran into about 10 years ago, I don't remember who he worked for but he was teaching first aid to the police and fire services.

Should Boozy turn out to be still alive, and I sincerely hope he is, then I apologise in advance for the duff info.

I wish I had better news for you but I've been trying to locate Willie Cairney for quite some time. Best estimates point to the fact he is/was in the Cumbernauld/Condoratt area or at least was up until recently. I have a few other avenues yet to explore but if anything comes up I will let you know. If you look back this thread to 1st July 2005 you will see a very good photograph of Willie taken when we were in Cyprus during a UN tour in the sixties.

Was your grandad in the RSF or the RHF? The reason I ask is I'm almost certain Willie Cairney was ex HLI and obviously joined the RHF at the time of the amalgamation.

Ronnie,

Don't know if you will remember me, John Mallon, ex Signal Platoon, Bn HQ, A Coy etc. Had many a happy lemonade with members of the Pipe Band, Davie Howe, Scanny, Big Scouse, Ronnie Hughes etc. What ever happened to Spew Blair and company? What has happened to Jimmie Baigrie? the last time I saw him was in Redford just before I transferred in 1974. Is Genghis still "blowing". I can remember Genghis playing his Pipes at his best when he was full of "lemonade", or was it what was in the same glass as the lemonade. Met Davie Caird after he left The Palace, Buckigham Palace that is not the Bar, way back in 1980 after being at the Palace for 10 years, Records forgot about him. Sadly I believe now that he is no longer with us.

Speak to you soon.

Yours Aye
