Medals The Highland Light Infantry WWI
Commemoration Service for Sergeant Arthur Ramage, DCM, MM & bar, Croix de Guerre, MID
Tuesday 1 August 2017 at 1100
Carluke War Memorial, Market Place, Carluke
Carluke has been described as the “Bravest town in Britain” producing no less than three recipients of the Victoria Cross. However, the most decorated soldier to hail from that town was actually Sergeant Arthur Ramage of 12th Battalion, The Highland Light Infantry, as seen from his row of medals above.
Arthur was just 26 years old when he was shot by a sniper – by which time, this brave man had been decorated several times for his outstanding gallantry and devotion to duty, by the French Government, as well as by the British Government,
Arthur was killed in action at the Third Battle of Ypres on 1 August 1917; and the members of the Carluke Parish Historical Society feel that his contribution should be recognised on the centenary of his death with a service and wreath-laying at the Carluke War Memorial, followed by refreshments.
All are welcome to attend.
